[c/o Pete]

We’ve spent a week waiting for spring to at last shrug off the last of the tarrying ice and snow. Tomorrow, May 1, we give up waiting.

Each of us is lugging along at least one or two especially weighty items that we insist (however dubiously) are utterly essential. Mine: a paperback (thank God) edition of David Foster Wallace’s doorstop masterwork, Infinite Jest — all 1079 pages of which amount to My Other Summer 2011 Project of Positively Ludicrous Proportions. As it happens, the book also doubles expertly as a makeshift pillow.

And mothers of the country
Take two flags and make a sail.
We’ll sail the big Dominion.

DF Wallace also published a collection of essays, titled: A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again. Indeed.

One Response to Departure

  1. Jodie Foster says:

Thanks for the writeup. I definitely agree with what you are saying. I have been talking about this subject a lot lately with my brother so hopefully this will get him to see my point of view. Fingers crossed!
